The Boarding Pack

Sample pack

See what you get before you spend anything.

These are extracts from a real pack we produced from made-up test answers. The applicant, business and council are invented. Your pack follows the same structure, written around your own answers.

How gaps are flagged

[MISSING: like this] means information is still needed. [CHECK: like this] means two answers disagree and need sorting before you submit. Nothing is guessed or filled in for you.

What’s in a pack

  1. Applicant and activity overview
  2. Premises and accommodation
  3. Staffing, experience and supervision
  4. Dog admission: vaccinations, introductions and group management
  5. Daily routine: feeding, exercise, enrichment, toileting, rest
  6. Monitoring health and behaviour, and illness or injury
  7. Cleaning, hygiene and disease control
  8. Emergency and fire plan
  9. Transport
  10. Record keeping
  11. Risk assessment

This page shows a few short extracts to give you a feel for the pack. It does not cover everything a full pack includes, or everything your council may ask for. A full pack covers all 11 sections above, written around your own answers.

Dog Boarding Licence Application Pack

DRAFT for review. Yellow items need information and turquoise items are conflicting answers to resolve before this is submitted. The council decides whether to grant a licence.

Details to add before this is submitted

  • [MISSING: premises address and postcode]
  • [MISSING: applicant telephone number]
  • [MISSING: key holder’s name, contact number and relationship to the applicant]

2. Premises and accommodation

Layout and designated dog rooms

  • The designated dog rooms are my kitchen and my living room.
  • Both rooms have a window that opens and a full-height door that latches shut.
  • Kitchen: about 9 square metres. Two dogs sleep here.
  • Living room: about 14 square metres. One dog sleeps here.
  • Rooms that are off limits to boarded dogs: upstairs [CHECK: Q12 says upstairs is off limits to boarded dogs, but Q18 says a sick, injured or infectious dog would be isolated in the spare bedroom upstairs], the dining room, the home office and the utility room.

Security and barriers to the outside

  • Between the dogs and each way out of the home I have a closed room door, a baby gate across the hallway, and the front door, which is always kept locked, with a porch door as a second barrier.
  • The windows in the dog rooms have restrictors so a dog cannot get out.

Temperature and ventilation

  • Central heating keeps the rooms between 15 and 24 degrees.
  • [MISSING: how the home is kept cool in hot weather]
  • If the heating failed, I would use a safe plug-in heater under supervision or move the dogs to a warmer room. I would call my vet if a dog seemed unwell.

8. Emergency and fire plan

Fire and evacuation

  • Everyone and every dog leaves by the front door or the back garden door.
  • Leads are kept by each exit.
  • I would take the dogs to the garden and call the fire brigade.

If my home became uninhabitable

  • The dogs would go to my sister’s house nearby. She has agreed to take them.
  • As a last resort, they would go to a boarding kennel.

11. Risk assessment (extract)

  • Hazard: dog escaping from the garden. At risk: boarded dogs. Controls: fully fenced garden with 1.8 metre closeboard panels, gate with a bolt and a padlock, only one dog in the garden at a time.
  • Hazard: overheating or poor ventilation. At risk: boarded dogs. Controls: windows open on a restrictor. [MISSING: how the home is kept cool in hot weather]
  • Hazard: home becoming uninhabitable. At risk: boarded dogs. Controls: my sister’s house nearby, where she has agreed to take the dogs, or a boarding kennel as a last resort.

Extracts only. Sections 1, 3 to 7, 9 and 10 are not shown here, and the sections shown are shortened.

Your pack comes as an editable Word document, so you can fill in the gaps and make changes before you submit.
